The CTE Student - "Constructionist"

In a study of learning theories we are analyzing the Constructivist Learning Theory, one of my favorites. We were posed two questions that I have presented below. I would love to hear from others on your thoughts of the Construstivist Learning Theory and your teaching practices.

"Based on your own K-12 education experience, can you relate or identify with the Constructivist Learning theory? How so?"

My teaching credential is a Career Technical Education (CTE) credential specific to computer systems and networks. CTE courses focus on career training incorporating specific on-the-job performance along with core standards throughout the learning. The majority of the learning is constructivist with a mix of cognitivist for front loading vocabulary and tool knowledge. There can be some behaviorist theory applied when specific procedures must be followed, for example, proper grounding of equipment to prevent electrical shock. Students learn by doing in CTE classes. They build their knowledge of a specific skill by learning the basics first then progressing to advanced processes. Almost all learning is hands on with reflection on the processes, procedures and outcomes. Capstone academic competitions where students perform their skill is evidence of learning.

"Describe how the Constructivist Learning theory could improve the American K-12 educational system today?"

Constructivist Learning Theory provides evidence of learning. The teaching approaches; active learning, learning-by-doing, scaffolded learning and collaborative learning (Harasim, 2017, p. 70) all allow a student to own their learning experience. The Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) in Clovis, Ca. is an excellent example of the Constructivist Learning theory in action. A CTE teacher and a core subject matter teacher are teamed up to provide a curriculum rich career education.

The Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art education reform effort at the secondary level to date. CART combines rigorous academics with technical, design, process, entrepreneurial, and critical thinking skills. (“CART,” 2018)

With the need for students to preform 21st-century skills with ease, the learning needs to shift from passing a test to performing skill level tasks as evidence of learning.

Papert stated it well by adapting Constructivist to “Constructionist” signifying a philosophy of life and learning by doing and making. (Harasim, 2017, p. 72)
